Bárbara

Cruz

Bárbara Cruz was born in Necaxa, Puebla, in 1951. She was self-taught until she entered the Painting Workshop at the Instituto de Bellas Artes de Morelos (Institute of Fine Arts of Morelos) in Cuernavaca in 1984 and later, in 1989, the workshop of master Roger von Gunten.
With a strong connection to nature, in 1976 she made a great trip to the Sierra Tarahumara and in 1978 to Central and South America with the purpose of continuing her training and artistic exploration.
In 1981 she settled in Amatlan, Morelos, and began to produce work continuously.

She has had solo and group exhibitions in important cultural centers in France, Switzerland, and throughout Mexico, including Casa del Lago (House of the Lake), the Galería Manuel Felguérez de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Manuel Felguérez Gallery of the National Autonomous Metropolitan University), the Universidad de Aguascalientes (University of Aguascalientes), the Museo de Arte de Tlaxcala (Tlaxcala Museum of Art) and the Museo de la Ciudad de México (Mexico City Museum). She has been selected for the Biennials of Diego Rivera (1993), Rufino Tamayo (2000) and has been a fellow of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores (National System of Creators) and the Fondo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes (State Fund for Culture and the Arts). In 2011 she was part of the artistic team of the EnTijuanArte project, which created public art in the border city of Tijuana, Mexico.

A lover of flora and nature, her work is an explosion of color that shapes a composition with harmony and balance. Color is most important, without previous work, just a spontaneity where its relationship with nature is reflected.
