Roger

von Gunten

Roger von Gunten was born in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1933 and became a Mexican citizen in 1981. He learned to paint at his father's side since he was a child, thus forming the idea of becoming an artist. From 1947 to 1952 he studied painting and graphic design at the Zürich Kunstgewerbeschüle (School of Arts and Crafts), under the direction of Johannes Itten, professor artist of the Bauhaus. Upon his arrival in Mexico in 1957 he continued his studies at the Universidad Iberoamericana (Iberoamerican University), where he learned Metal Engraving under the direction of the artist and master Guillermo Silva Santamaría.
When he had recently graduated from college, he held his first individual exhibition in 1956 in Switzerland and in 1957 at the Galería Antonio Souza (Antonio Souza Gallery) in Mexico.

Since then, he has held more than 120 national and international solo exhibitions, participated in more than 200 group exhibitions, created stage designs for theater and opera, illustrated books, records, and continues to work as a teacher, which he has done for more than 40 years.

Pioneer of the so-called “Generación de la Ruptura” ("Generation of Rupture"), he stands out mainly for his use of color and a unique style that has gone from figurative to abstract. Since 1993 he has been a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (National System of Art Creators) and has always been dedicated to teaching, both in public and private institutions such as the Universidad Iberoamericana (Iberoamerican University) and the Mexico City College, as well as in his own open and free workshops, and through countless special courses dedicated to teaching the theory and practice of the color of his teacher Johannes Itten, which he has modified to make it more practical.

His work has been of great influence in the arts of Mexico and later generations of visual artists.

Among several awards and distinctions, it is worth highlighting the Award in the Segundo Festival Pictórico de Acapulco (Second Pictorial Festival of Acapulco), (1994); a Goya Medal in the XI Bienal Iberoamericana de Arte (XI Iberoamerican Biennial of Art), (1998) and the Medalla de Bellas Artes (Medal of Fine Arts), (2014), which is the highest award given by Mexico in the field of visual arts. In 2019 he was conferred the Honoris Causa degree by the Universidad del Instituto Americano Cultural (University of the American Cultural Institute) for his contribution to culture and was awarded the "Emeritus Artist Medal" by Art21Studio for Un Siglo Azteca , (One Aztec Century), 50 years, of artistic creation. His work has been exhibited and can be found in museums and collections in Mexico, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

“Painting is, for me, a creative and concrete craft. It is enough to use the visual elements of color, form, and manual technique to materialize an image in which the inner message can be transmitted to that spectator capable of contemplating it in a participatory way.

I believe that culture represents the innate splendor of human consciousness, that which illuminates the sky like a rainbow through the different artistic disciplines."
